NWS Forecaster Discussion
026 fxus63 klbf 202009 afdlbf Area forecast discussion National Weather Service North Platte NE 310 PM CDT Sat Mar 20 2010 Synopsis... at 19z...hand analysis of the surface data showed high pressure centered in eastern Nebraska and northwest Colorado. There was also a trough or warm front along the High Plains from southwest Saskatchewan through the eastern parts of Montana...Wyoming and Colorado. A cold front was stretched across Manitoba... Saskatchewan...Alberta and British Columbia. A very cold air mass was poised north of that front. In the upper levels...the 6.7 micron water vapor imagery showed a developing wave in northern Oklahoma and south central Kansas. In the northwest...a maturing cyclone was located off the coast of British Columbia. && Short range...tonight through Tuesday night. Lows tonight are likely to be a little colder than they were last night. Then...as an upper ridge builds into the northern plains...warmer temperatures are expected Sunday and even warmer Monday. A front coming through late Monday afternoon and night will generate enough system relative isentropic lift and elevated 2d- frontogenesis to produce some precipitation. In fact...there is 100-200mb pressure decrease on the 290k...295k and 300k surfaces. In addition...precipitable water values increase to about 0.50 and elevated lifted indices decrease to -3c Monday night in the southeast Nebraska Panhandle. As a result...we will include some chance of precipitation Monday night with a mention of thunderstorms in the Panhandle. The chances of precipitation will diminish through the day Tuesday and Tuesday night as the front makes its way to the Southern Plains. Extended...Wednesday through Saturday. Cool weather will then continue through middle-week with cold nights and not-so-warm days. By late Friday night to early Saturday...a warm moist trajectory develops in the 290-300k layer from the Texas Gulf Coast to the northern plains. Isentropic upglide is indicated in that layer as well...so the mention of precipitation next Saturday is appropriate. Still...since that is day seven of the forecast...we will keep the probability low. && Aviation... VFR condition in place throughout region with cloud deck associated with cold air aloft moving across southwest Nebraska this afternoon. North winds occasionally gusting up to 20 miles per hour but this should be subsiding by around sunset. VFR ceilings/visibilities will remain in place through the next 24 hours as drier and warmer air arrives. && Lbf watches/warnings/advisories...none. && $$ Short range/extended...Springer aviation...13
