... This is last day of National flood safety awareness week 2010...
Your National Weather Service office at New Orleans/Baton Rouge
Louisiana is Happy to have your participation in the third annual
National flood safety awareness week.
The theme today... March 19... is flood safety and preparation. Floods
happen everywhere. Between 1974 and 2003... an average of 106 deaths
occurred in floods per year. Good preparation and knowing what to do
in a flood will increase your safety and possibly your survival.
Some flood safety preparation tips are...
Prepare a family disaster plan.
Determine if your insurance covers flood damages. If not... get flood
insurance.
Keep insurance... important documents... and other valuable items in a
safe deposit box.
Assemble a disaster supplies kit.
Find out where you can go if ordered to evacuate.
Make a keep-in-touch arrangement with relatives and friends.
Refer to the American Red Cross or to the federal emergency
management agency web sites for ideas and examples of disaster plans
and disaster kits.

NWS Forecaster Discussion
966 fxus65 kvef 191637 aaa afdvef Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas Nevada 938 am PDT Friday Mar 19 2010 Synopsis...locally gusty north winds will persist behind an exiting low pressure system today. High pressure building in over the weekend will result in mostly clear skies with temperatures warming to about 5 degrees above normal by Sunday. && Update...satellite shows cloudiness has exited southern Mohave County as shortwave trough moves east across Arizona leaving clear skies areawide. Advisory level gusts are being observed within the Colorado River valley between Lake Mohave and Lake Havasu City. Will update the zones to remove the mention of clouds/showers from Mohave County. No other changes made. && Aviation...for McCarran...north to northeast winds around 10kts will continue through today. Winds may increase at times this morning and gust up to 20 kts. Mostly clear skies are expected. For the rest of southern Nevada...northwest Arizona...and southeast California...north to northeast winds across the area will generally be around 10-20kts through much of today. Stronger winds are expected down the Colorado River valley where winds may gust over 35kts though late afternoon. Mostly clear skies anticipated across the entire area. -Jacques- && Previous discussion...300 am PDT Friday Mar 19...no significant differences in model solutions through Sunday. Low pressure system responsible for the strong winds Thursday and Thursday night will move into the Rocky Mountain region today with strong but dry northerly flow over the forecast area. Nam12 based MOS guidance supports the Wind Advisory in effect today for the Colorado River valley with locally breezy conditions across the rest of the area. An upper ridge will build in over the weekend with mostly clear skies and lighter winds. European model (ecmwf) is trending stronger with a shortwave trough moving into the Pacific northwest Sunday night. For now it looks like any precipitation with this feature will remain well to the north through Sunday night however. Temperatures will start out fairly warm this morning due to winds and lingering cloud cover overnight. As a result...high temperatures are still expected to be a little above normal today. Saturday looks to be the coolest day in the short term with temperatures warming to around 5 degrees above normal by Sunday. Long term...fairly good agreement between models through the extended period with another strong system potentially affecting the area Tuesday and Wednesday. Ridge continues to break down Monday as a Pacific shortwave starts diving southeast. By Tuesday morning...both the Euro/GFS are showing a closed low forming across the Idaho/NV/UT border and eventually pushing south along the Nevada/Utah border Tuesday afternoon. This is a fairly similar pattern to the last two systems...including the one that came through yesterday. Did increase winds across the entire area and probability of precipitation mainly over the eastern areas of the County Warning Area...although this system...like the previous ones will have little available moisture to work with. Temperatures on Tuesday look to be the warmest of the week before falling several degrees Wednesday. Temperatures will start to rebound Thursday and Friday as high pressure rebuilds back over the area. && Vef watches/warnings/advisories... Nevada...Wind Advisory until 6 PM PDT this evening for nvz021. Arizona...Wind Advisory until 6 PM MST this evening for azz002-036. California...Wind Advisory until 6 PM PDT this evening for caz527. && $$ Pierce/Harrison/gorelow Http://weather.Gov/lasvegas
