478 fxus65 kslc 142008 afdslc Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City Utah 208 PM MDT sun Mar 14 2010 Synopsis...a Pacific storm system will move away from the region tonight. Dry and mild high pressure aloft will develop across the region for the first half of the upcoming week...before another system approaches the area midweek. && Discussion...early afternoon water vapor imagery and objective analysis depict an upper low spinning just south of The Four Corners region with moisture wrapping around the north side of the low into east central Utah. As low continues to gradually pull away from the region expect any lingering snowfall to diminish by middle evening...and will drop remaining winter weather headlines with afternoon package. Clearing skies may allow for patchy fog across northern and western valleys overnight where low level moisture remains in place. Meanwhile middle level ridge extends across the inland Pacific northwest and is forecast to amplify as it builds eastward across the intermountain west through Tuesday. Associated warming should allow temperatures to quickly modify across the forecast area. As 700mb temperatures warm above 0c by Tuesday afternoon expect maximum temperatures to exceed climatological norms by 5f or more across most locations Tuesday and Wednesday. The next shortwave trough forecast to directly impact the area looks to drop into northern Utah from the northwest during the day Thursday...and linger across the region into Friday. 12z ec has trended weaker and drier with this wave while the GFS remains more aggressive in developing precipitation across much of the forecast area. For now have maintained chance probability of precipitation during the Thursday period with somewhat lower probability of precipitation lingering into Friday. && Aviation...ceilings will continue to be the predominant operational weather concern today at kslc. Anticipating VFR ceilings...but bases are expected to remain at or just below 6000ft above ground level through most of this evening. That said...a 30 percent chance exists ceilings will break up by 00z...60 percent chance by 03z. Northerly winds will prevail. && Slc watches/warnings/advisories... Utah...none.
