Special Weather Statement
Statement as of 3:41 PM CDT on March 17, 2010
... Winter is not over yet..
A strong storm will affect the panhandles Friday and Saturday. Cold
air will move south across the panhandles Friday afternoon and
Friday night. This cold air will combine with low level moisture to
bring snow to the region Friday night and Saturday.
Some snow accumulation along with very strong north winds will cause
areas of blowing and drifting snow... making traveling difficult. At
this time... it appears the best chance of accumulating snowfall will
be across the Oklahoma Panhandle and the northern Texas Panhandle.
In addition... wind chill readings may fall into the single digits
early Saturday morning across much of the area.
Uncertainty remains with regards to the strength and track of this
storm... so future forecasts may have significant changes.
You are encouraged to stay tuned to your local media outlets and NOAA
Weather Radio for the latest information on this storm. More

NWS Forecaster Discussion
056 fxus64 kama 180318 aab afdama Area forecast discussion...updated National Weather Service Amarillo Texas 1018 PM CDT Wednesday Mar 17 2010 Update... VFR conditions will prevail through 06z Friday. East and southeast winds tonight 5 to 15 knots will become south to southwesterly around 15 to 25 knots with higher gusts after 15z Thursday. Winds expected to diminish at the Dalhart and Guymon taf sites after 00z Friday to around 10 to 20 knots...however southerly winds of 15 to 25 knots with higher gusts will continue at the Amarillo taf site through 06z Friday. Schneider && Previous discussion... /issued 631 PM CDT Wednesday Mar 17 2010/ Aviation... VFR conditions will prevail through Thursday afternoon. Light and variable winds tonight will become south to southwesterly and increase to near 15 to 25 knots with higher gusts after 15z Thursday. Schneider Previous discussion... /issued 439 PM CDT Wednesday Mar 17 2010/ Discussion... low clouds and fog resulted in slightly cooler conditions over the eastern Oklahoma and northeast Texas panhandles this afternoon and some adjustments were made for this. Overnight...temperatures will be near normal and winds should start to pick up late. On Thursday...warmer conditions will be the rule as southwest winds pick up. No major changes were made here from the previous forecast. Friday was the focus of this forecast package. An upper level system moves into the Southern Plains and brings cold air southward. A cold front drops into the panhandles on Friday bringing rain. This will create quite a difference in high temperatures from northwest to southeast as the colder air works southward. The timing of the front will keep the Oklahoma and the northern Texas Panhandle temperatures in the upper 30s and 40s while areas in the southeast Texas Panhandle climb to the upper 50s. As a result...maximum temperatures will occur earlier in the day in many locations and a non-diurnal pattern was followed for Friday. By later in the day Friday...rain will change quickly over to snow and for the overnight period. Winds will increase behind the front. On Saturday snow will linger into the afternoon hours before the system moves on to the east. Total snow amounts could range from one to four inches. Strong winds could add wind chill and blowing snow concerns. From Sunday through early next week...a dry warming trend is anticipated. Around the middle of next week another system could bring another shot of cooler air to the panhandles. Fire weather... fire weather concerns will remain low through next weekend. A sharp change in wind direction and speed is expected on Friday with the front. && Ama watches/warnings/advisories... Texas...none. OK...none. && $$ 11/14
