NWS Forecaster Discussion
542 fxus61 kbgm 141457 afdbgm Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Binghamton New York 1057 am EDT sun Mar 14 2010 Synopsis... an large intense storm centered near the middle Atlantic coast will slowly move east today and Monday. Dry mild weather will return to the area starting Tuesday. && Near term /until 6 PM this evening/... ..updated at 1050 am... Area of convection continues to make northwestward progress...and cells are beginning to show up across the Poconos late this morning. Thus...we've added the mention of isolated thunderstorms through about middle to late afternoon...for much of northeast PA and Sullivan County New York. Overall...the convective environment still appears to become less favorable with further inland extent...but middle-layered lapse rates...and current echo coverage...warrants at least a mention of isolated activity. Consequently...we've added a low chance into the probability of thunder grids as well. Near-term temperatures/dew points were tweaked slightly...but afternoon highs still appear to be on target. && Short term /6 PM this evening through Tuesday night/... cooling again tonight of the low layers will mean more of a mix across the County Warning Area. Again the most snowfall will be across the highest elevations and that will be light. Will still be under the influence of the ul low over middle Atlantic into Monday...at which time the ul low moves off the coast allowing heights to rise over US. The surface low stays just off the coast before moving out also Monday night. Precipitation will end from northwest to southeast late Monday and Monday night. Temperature profiles right around 0c in the low layers with 850 temperatures falling t0 -2c. For snow to fall it probably have to be night. For it to accumulate the ground will have to dry out some or already have snow on it. Tuesday and Tuesday night will be dry and mild as heights build. The stacked low moves well out to sea to the east. The east to NE flow shifts to north then northwest but the 850 temperatures are near zero so no lake response. && Long term /Wednesday through Saturday/... medium range models in good agreement through extended period. Forecast based strongly on the 00z/14 European model (ecmwf) and mix of 12z/13 European model (ecmwf) ensemble mean toward the end of the period. 00z/14 GFS/gefs have a similar idea as the favored guidance...so the extended will continue to be dominated by a large area of high pressure covering much of the eastern United States. Temperatures will run several degrees above normal with highs climbing into the 50s and lows near 30 with further moderation late in the period. On Saturday, a frontal boundary may sag south from eastern Ontario/northern New York with an increase in cloud cover and just an outside shot at some showers or sprinkles. Otherwise...fair and pleasant March weather appears to be in store for a majority of the week. && Aviation /15z Sunday through Thursday/... updated as of 1133z...strong low pressure moving along the Atlantic Seaboard will continue to draw deep moisture into the region today...then move north toward New England by tonight. MOS statistical forecasts look too pessimistic and have generally gone a category above...meaning prevailing MVFR ceilings are expected today and tonight for most terminals. Ksyr-krme most likely to have some VFR early this morning as east-southeast winds downsloping off the Catskill Mountains provide an area of drying over north central New York. MVFR should also work into these stations after winds become a little more east-NE over the next few hours. Areas of showers with occasional visibility restrictions will lift north of the region by afternoon with just periods of drizzle thereafter...and probably no visibility restrictions. Easterly winds through the taf period at 10-20 knots with gusts 25-35 knots through 12z-15z will diminish in gustiness this afternoon with speeds lowering to around 10 kts tonight. Outlook... Sun night...MVFR. Chance drizzle/showers. Monday...imprvg to VFR. Monday night to Thursday...VFR && Hydrology... ..updated at 11 am... Based on the latest rfc forecasts and river level trends...warnings have been dropped for Waverly and Wilkes-Barre. It appears that water levels will stay under fs at both sites...even with some minor additional runoff from the Chemung basin. No other main Stem flooding anticipated. && Bgm watches/warnings/advisories... PA...none. New York...none. && $$ Synopsis...tac near term...mlj short term...tac long term...jab aviation...heden/jab hydrology...mlj
