NWS Forecaster Discussion
517 fxus65 kabq 202104 afdabq Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Albuquerque nm 304 PM MDT Sat Mar 20 2010 Discussion... with clearing skies in the wake of last nights storm the forecast area can expect low temperatures from 8 to 20 degrees below normal tonight. A ridge of high pressure will move overhead Sunday keeping the weather dry and allowing a warming trend to commence...but high temperatures will remain a few to several degrees below normal. The warming trend will peak on Monday as a Lee trough develops at the surface and west/SW flow aloft strengthens. Mondays highs should reach between a few and 12 degrees above normal...while SW winds become breezy east of the Central Mountain chain. Tuesday...models depict precipitation chances increasing from the west as a southern stream trough becomes absorbed by a deepening upper level low as it digs toward nm out of the northwest. The combined energy of the merging systems could result in another potent winter storm for parts of our forecast area...although model thickness values are a bit warmer than the system that just passed. GFS and European model (ecmwf) currently bring the upper low center eastward across nm in the vicinity of I-40 Wednesday with lingering showers continuing Wednesday night through Thursday. 44 && Aviation... other than a few Montana obscurations on the upper slopes of the central Montana chain before sunset today...there should be no significant aviation hazards at least through the day Sunday. Next aviation discussion scheduled for 09z. 43 && Fire weather... other than just a few snow showers lingering along and near the central Montana chain until sunset or shortly before...dry weather will be settling in through at least Monday night. Ventilation trends will worsen Sunday compared to today...varying from poor to fair most areas of west and central nm to generally fair to good across the eastern plains...as upper level ridge of high pressure builds in the storms wake. Locally gusty northwest to north winds are possible along and east of the Central Mountain chain this evening before the ridge takes hold. Warming trend expected Sunday and more so Monday...with temperatures rebounding to the 70s in the east Monday. With the ridge starting to flatten...ventilation rates should improve Monday. Another storm system on track to impact New Mexico starting Tuesday across north and west central sections and will linger through Wednesday. Track of this system is still varying somewhat from one computer model run to the next...so details of where most significant winds and precipitation will be are still a little uncertain. There will also be another strong cold front associated with this system...which will lower temperatures on Wednesday well below normal again...especially across the north and east. 43 && Preliminary point temps/pops...
