NWS Forecaster Discussion
318 fxus63 kgld 041742 afdgld Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Goodland Kansas 1042 am MST Thursday Dec 4 2008 Discussion... 218 am MST Thursday Dec 4 2008 Burlington was the first to report snowfall within the forecast area. Expect the snow to spread across the majority of the County Warning Area this morning with 2 to 3 inches of snow is possible across the far west portion of the forecast area with lesser amounts east. The snowfall is in response to a shortwave trough currently moving across the High Plains. Light northerly winds will continue through today keeping cold air in place with the maximum temperature for today remaining chilly...lower 20s west and middle to upper 20s further east. By tonight...the shortwave trough will have moved out of the area and subsidence will move overhead. This will help end any remaining snowfall as skies will begin to clear out overnight. This will aid in maximum radiational cooling. That coupled with any snow on the ground will allow temperatures to once again drop into the lower teens. Going into Friday...southerly winds briefly pick up-bringing warmer air back into place. Temperatures should modify closely to normal values in the lower 40s and warm into the 50s by Saturday. Through the weekend...long wave pattern has a broad 500 mb ridge over the southwest states keeping the High Plains under northwest flow. A cold front will push into the forecast area Monday afternoon...re- introducing snow to the forecast. Made no changes to the extended. Burtis && Aviation... 1038 am MST Thursday Dec 4 2008 For the 18z taf...will see IFR to LIFR ceilings/visible at kgld as light to moderate snow continues to fall through the early evening hours before tapering off. Once precipitation ends...should see IFR ceilings continue as low stratus hangs around through around 12z Friday. Anticipate VFR conditions at kmck through the effective taf period with precipitation remaining south of the terminal for the most part. Can't rule out a brief period of light snow at kmck confidence in temporal and spatial coverage is too low to warrant inclusion at this time. Foltz && Gld watches/warnings/advisories...
