... This is last day of National flood safety awareness week 2010...
Your National Weather Service office at New Orleans/Baton Rouge
Louisiana is Happy to have your participation in the third annual
National flood safety awareness week.
The theme today... March 19... is flood safety and preparation. Floods
happen everywhere. Between 1974 and 2003... an average of 106 deaths
occurred in floods per year. Good preparation and knowing what to do
in a flood will increase your safety and possibly your survival.
Some flood safety preparation tips are...
Prepare a family disaster plan.
Determine if your insurance covers flood damages. If not... get flood
insurance.
Keep insurance... important documents... and other valuable items in a
safe deposit box.
Assemble a disaster supplies kit.
Find out where you can go if ordered to evacuate.
Make a keep-in-touch arrangement with relatives and friends.
Refer to the American Red Cross or to the federal emergency
management agency web sites for ideas and examples of disaster plans
and disaster kits.

NWS Forecaster Discussion
715 fxus64 kshv 191648 afdshv Area forecast discussion National Weather Service Shreveport la 1148 am CDT Friday Mar 19 2010 Discussion... pressures are falling off over the west and the gradient is going to continue to allow for some gustiness this afternoon. Temperatures are nearing yesterday/S effort and would be on pace for middle to upper 70s if not for the wind. Low to middle 70s from west to east should work out today with still some upper 50s over the northwest and mlu pushing 70 already. Few cumulus so far and the sounding was a bit drier with the inversion lower...near 5kft. Scattered clouds at that level will crop up for much of the area. Meanwhile...the visible Sat is showing that and a good deal more clouds just our west where dew points are in the 50s. Little change needed at this time...just a few tweaks to highs and new NAM winds loaded in for the afternoon. /24/ && Aviation... a digging shortwave trough is forecast to move through The Four Corners around 20/0000 UTC. The movement of this feature should push a cold front toward the ih-30 corridor around 20/1200 UTC... toward the end of this forecast period. Limited moisture return in advance of this system will likely result in any rain showers/thunderstorms and rain occurring along or just ahead of the front...probably after 20/1200 UTC. In the meantime...expect VFR flight categories to continue across area terminals with increasing S winds. VAD wind profile from kfws and kshv are noting 25-45kt winds at 2k feet...so mentioning some wind shear in the tafs at all sites until around mid-morning...when the winds will mix down to the surface... /23/ && Preliminary point temps/pops... shv 74 49 64 36 50 / 10 10 80 60 40 mlu 75 46 69 37 50 / 10 10 70 80 40 deq 72 47 56 34 46 / 10 40 80 50 50 txk 71 48 61 35 45 / 10 20 80 60 50 eld 74 45 65 36 48 / 10 10 70 80 50 tyr 73 50 57 34 51 / 10 30 80 30 20 ggg 72 50 58 32 51 / 10 20 90 50 30 lfk 73 51 60 33 53 / 10 10 80 40 20 && Shv watches/warnings/advisories...
